Tablespoons to Grams

A level tablespoon of granulated sugar weighs 12.5 grams, a tablespoon of butter 14.2 g and a tablespoon of flour only 7.8 g. Pick the ingredient and the tablespoons to get grams.

1 cup of granulated sugar weighs 200 g, per USDA FoodData Central. Spoon dry ingredients into the cup and level them off; scooping straight from the bag packs in more.

How to convert tablespoons to grams

A tablespoon measures volume, so its weight depends on the ingredient. Multiply the tablespoons by the grams one tablespoon of that ingredient weighs:

grams = tablespoons × grams per tablespoon

USDA lists the weight of a level cup of each ingredient; a U.S. cup holds 16 tablespoons, so a tablespoon of granulated sugar is 200 g ÷ 16 = 12.5 g, and 3 tablespoons are 37.5 g. The calculator does this for 25 ingredients and also shows teaspoons, cups, milliliters and ounces.

Grams in one tablespoon

Ingredient 1 tbsp 1 tsp
Water 14.8 g 4.9 g
Milk, whole 15.2 g 5.1 g
Butter 14.2 g 4.7 g
Olive oil 13.5 g 4.5 g
Granulated sugar 12.5 g 4.2 g
Brown sugar, packed 13.8 g 4.6 g
Powdered sugar, unsifted 7.5 g 2.5 g
All-purpose flour 7.8 g 2.6 g
Honey 21.2 g 7.1 g
Maple syrup 19.7 g 6.6 g
Peanut butter 16.1 g 5.4 g
Cocoa powder 5.4 g 1.8 g
Cornstarch 8.0 g 2.7 g
Table salt 18.2 g 6.1 g

The figures are USDA cup weights divided by 16. Where USDA also lists a tablespoon directly the two agree closely: butter 14.2 g, olive oil 13.5 g, cocoa 5.4 g, honey 21 g.

Level, heaped and packed spoons

Recipes mean a level tablespoon unless they say otherwise: fill the spoon and sweep the top flat with a knife. A heaped tablespoon of flour weighs noticeably more, which is enough to dry out a batter. Brown sugar is meant to be packed, which is why it weighs more than granulated sugar spoon for spoon. Sticky ingredients such as honey and peanut butter slide out more easily from a lightly oiled spoon, so you get the full measure.

Scaling a recipe

When you double or halve a recipe, tablespoons pile up fast: 6 tablespoons of butter is 85 g, and 12 tablespoons is 3/4 cup. Weighing the larger amounts is quicker and more accurate than counting spoons, so convert the spoon measures to grams once and use a scale. For the cups in the same recipe, cups to tablespoons gives the spoon count, and grams to ounces converts the weights for a scale that reads ounces.

Tablespoons, teaspoons and milliliters

A U.S. tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, or 14.79 mL; it holds 3 teaspoons, and 16 tablespoons make a cup. The Australian tablespoon is 20 mL — four teaspoons — so Australian recipes that give tablespoons use about a third more. For teaspoons, see teaspoons to grams; for larger amounts, grams to cups; and for tablespoons in fluid ounces, tablespoons to ounces.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a tablespoon?

It depends on the ingredient: about 14.8 g of water, 12.5 g of granulated sugar, 14.2 g of butter, 7.8 g of all-purpose flour and 21 g of honey. A tablespoon is a volume — 14.8 mL — so heavier ingredients weigh more.

How many grams is a tablespoon of sugar?

12.5 g of granulated sugar, level. Brown sugar packed into the spoon is about 13.8 g, and unsifted powdered sugar about 7.5 g.

How many grams is a tablespoon of butter?

About 14.2 g. A U.S. stick of butter is 8 tablespoons and 113 g.

How many grams is a tablespoon of flour?

About 7.8 g of all-purpose flour, spooned in and leveled. A heaped or scooped tablespoon weighs noticeably more.

Is a tablespoon 15 grams?

Only for liquids close to water, such as milk (15.2 g). A U.S. tablespoon holds 14.8 mL; dry ingredients like flour weigh about half that, and honey about 40% more.

How many tablespoons are in 100 grams?

8 tablespoons of sugar, about 12.8 of flour and about 7 of butter. Switch the units in the calculator to go from grams to tablespoons.
