Product specs from abroad list sizes in meters or millimeters, while U.S. tape measures and plans use inches. For heights, people usually think in feet and inches: 69 inches is 5 ft 9 in, or 1.75 m. For that, the meters to feet and inches converter goes the other way.
Inches, meters and screens
Screen sizes are measured on the diagonal in inches, even where everything else is metric. A 55-inch TV has a 1.397 m diagonal, but its width is about 1.22 m for a 16:9 picture, because the width is 87% of the diagonal and the height 49%. To check whether a set fits a cabinet, convert the width, not the diagonal. The same caution applies to monitors, tablets and phones: the inch figure is always the diagonal of the glass, not the outer size of the case.
A quick estimate
A meter is about 40 inches (39.37), so dividing inches by 40 gives a fast estimate that is about 1.6% low: 80 inches is about 2 m, exactly 2.032 m. For exact centimeters, see inches to cm; for millimeters, inches to mm. Feet to meters works with 0.3048: feet to meters.
Converting a list
To convert a set of measurements — a cut list or the sizes on a drawing — open Convert a list of values below the converter and paste the inches one per line; the CSV gives each in meters. Keep the full precision until the last step: rounding each length to centimeters first can add up to several millimeters over a long list.
