Counting back 12 hours
Subtract 12 from the hour. If the result is below zero, add 24 and move to the previous day:
| Now | 12 hours ago |
|---|---|
| 9:45 p.m. | 9:45 a.m. (same day) |
| 6:30 p.m. | 6:30 a.m. (same day) |
| 12:00 p.m., noon | 12:00 a.m., midnight (same day) |
| 8:00 a.m. | 8:00 p.m. (previous day) |
| 3:15 a.m. | 3:15 p.m. (previous day) |
The answer falls on today’s date only when it is 12:00 p.m. (noon) or later now; in the morning, 12 hours back lands on yesterday afternoon or evening. The calculator does this from your device’s current time and marks “previous day” when the answer crosses midnight. Minutes stay as they are, because twelve hours is a whole number of hours.
A shortcut: same clock, switch a.m. and p.m.
Twelve hours is exactly half a day, so the clock reads the same and only a.m. and p.m. swap: 9:45 p.m. becomes 9:45 a.m. the same day. If it is morning now, the answer is the same time in the evening of the previous day — at 8:00 a.m., 12 hours ago was 8:00 p.m. yesterday. On a 24-hour clock, subtract 12 from the hour in the afternoon, or add 12 and step back one day in the morning: 08:00 becomes 20:00 yesterday.
When “12 hours ago” comes up
Social networks, chat apps and email clients show relative times — “12h ago” or “posted 12 hours ago” — instead of a clock time. The calculator turns that into the actual time in your zone, so you can tell whether a post went up last night or this morning. Twelve-hour shifts are standard for many nurses, firefighters and plant workers: a shift that ended at 7:00 a.m. began at 7:00 p.m. the previous day. Overnight fasts are often 12 hours too — a fast that ended at 8:00 a.m. started at 8:00 p.m. — and some medicines are taken every 12 hours; for those, follow the label or a pharmacist rather than a calculator, because this page only does the clock arithmetic.
Other start times and longer chains
The start field takes any time on a 24-hour clock — 9:45 p.m. is 21:45 — so you can count back 12 hours from a time other than now, such as the moment a flight landed. Add more rows to subtract or add further steps; each row shows the clock after that step. For the length of time between two clock times, use the time duration calculator; for adding up hours worked, the hours calculator; to turn a 24-hour time into a.m. and p.m., the military time converter.
Time zones and clock changes
The answer uses the time zone your device is set to. A post that shows “12h ago” was published at the same instant everywhere, but the clock time differs by zone: 10:45 a.m. in New York is 7:45 a.m. in Los Angeles. On the two nights a year when daylight saving time starts or ends, 12 hours back on the wall clock is one hour more or less than 12 elapsed hours.
