Counting back 6 hours
Subtract 6 from the hour. If the result is below zero, add 24 and move to the previous day:
| Now | 6 hours ago |
|---|---|
| 9:45 p.m. | 3:45 p.m. (same day) |
| 2:30 p.m. | 8:30 a.m. (same day) |
| 12:00 p.m., noon | 6:00 a.m. (same day) |
| 6:00 a.m. | 12:00 a.m., midnight (same day) |
| 3:15 a.m. | 9:15 p.m. (previous day) |
The answer falls on today’s date whenever it is 6:00 a.m. or later now; only in the small hours does 6 hours back land on yesterday evening. The calculator does this from your device’s current time and marks “previous day” when the answer crosses midnight. Minutes stay as they are, because six hours is a whole number of hours.
A shortcut: the opposite side of the clock
Six hours is a quarter of a day and half a turn of the hour hand, so 6 hours ago the hand pointed to the opposite number: from 9 it was at 3, from 2 it was at 8. Keep the minutes, then decide a.m. or p.m.: if the hour now is 6 or later, subtract 6 and stay in the same half of the day (9:45 p.m. gives 3:45 p.m.); if it is earlier, add 6 and switch a.m. and p.m. (2:30 p.m. gives 8:30 a.m.). From 1:00 to 5:59 a.m. the switch takes you to yesterday evening: 3:15 a.m. gives 9:15 p.m. the day before.
When “6 hours ago” comes up
Social networks, chat apps and email clients show relative times — “6h ago” or “posted 6 hours ago” — instead of a clock time. The calculator turns that into the actual time in your zone, which helps when you need to say when a message was sent or match it with something else that happened. Six hours is also a short night’s sleep — a night that ended at 6:30 a.m. after six hours began at 12:30 a.m. — and a common half shift: someone leaving at 3:00 p.m. after six hours started at 9:00 a.m. Some medicines are taken every 6 hours; for those, follow the label or a pharmacist rather than a calculator, because this page only does the clock arithmetic.
Other start times and longer chains
The start field takes any time on a 24-hour clock — 9:45 p.m. is 21:45 — so you can count back 6 hours from a time other than now, such as the moment a flight landed. Add more rows to subtract or add further steps; each row shows the clock after that step. For the length of time between two clock times, use the time duration calculator; for adding up hours worked, the hours calculator; to turn a 24-hour time into a.m. and p.m., the military time converter.
Time zones and clock changes
The answer uses the time zone your device is set to. A post that shows “6h ago” was published at the same instant everywhere, but the clock time differs by zone: 10:45 a.m. in New York is 7:45 a.m. in Los Angeles. On the two nights a year when daylight saving time starts or ends, 6 hours back on the wall clock is one hour more or less than 6 elapsed hours. To see today’s date and week number, open what is today’s date; for a forward count, 30 minutes from now works the same way.
