The calculator below starts at your current local time and subtracts 7 hours. For example, 7 hours before 9:45 p.m. was 2:45 p.m..

Read 2-part entries like 3:45 as

= 7 h

Tap + or − to add or subtract a row. A number on its own is read as minutes. With a start time, each row shows the clock after that step.

Counting back 7 hours

Subtract 7 from the hour. If the result is below zero, add 24 and move to the previous day:

Now 7 hours ago
9:45 p.m. 2:45 p.m. (same day)
5:30 p.m. 10:30 a.m. (same day)
8:00 a.m. 1:00 a.m. (same day)
7:00 a.m. 12:00 a.m., midnight (same day)
3:15 a.m. 8:15 p.m. (previous day)

The answer falls on today’s date whenever it is 7:00 a.m. or later now; before that, 7 hours back lands on yesterday evening. The calculator does this from your device’s current time and marks “previous day” when the answer crosses midnight. Minutes stay as they are, because seven hours is a whole number of hours.

A shortcut: 12 hours back, 5 hours forward

Seven hours is five hours short of half a day, so switch a.m. and p.m. and then add five hours: 9:45 p.m. becomes 9:45 a.m., plus five hours is 2:45 p.m. In the morning the switch takes you to yesterday evening, and the five hours often carry you back past midnight: at 8:00 a.m., 8:00 p.m. yesterday plus five hours is 1:00 a.m. today. If it is earlier than 7:00 a.m., you stay on yesterday: at 3:15 a.m., 3:15 p.m. yesterday plus five is 8:15 p.m. yesterday.

When “7 hours ago” comes up

Social networks, chat apps and email clients show relative times — “7h ago” or “posted 7 hours ago” — instead of a clock time. The calculator turns that into the actual time in your zone, which helps when you need to say when a message was sent or match it with something else that happened. Seven hours is the minimum nightly sleep the CDC recommends for adults: to get seven hours by a 6:30 a.m. alarm, you need to be asleep by 11:30 p.m. It is also a common school or part-time day — 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For medicine, follow the label or a pharmacist rather than a calculator; this page only does the clock arithmetic.

Other start times and longer chains

The start field takes any time on a 24-hour clock — 9:45 p.m. is 21:45 — so you can count back 7 hours from a time other than now, such as the moment a flight landed. Add more rows to subtract or add further steps; each row shows the clock after that step. For the length of time between two clock times, use the time duration calculator; for adding up hours worked, the hours calculator; to turn a 24-hour time into a.m. and p.m., the military time converter.

Time zones and clock changes

The answer uses the time zone your device is set to. A post that shows “7h ago” was published at the same instant everywhere, but the clock time differs by zone: 10:45 a.m. in New York is 7:45 a.m. in Los Angeles. On the two nights a year when daylight saving time starts or ends, 7 hours back on the wall clock is one hour more or less than 7 elapsed hours. To see today’s date and week number, open what is today’s date; for a forward count, 30 minutes from now works the same way.
