How to use the timer

Tap one of the Quick set buttons — 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes — or type hours, minutes and seconds, then press Start. While it runs, the page shows the time left in large digits, a progress bar, and the clock time when it will end, such as Ends at 3:42 PM. Pause holds the remaining time, +1 min adds a minute, and Reset goes back to the length you set. When time is up, the display turns red, the alarm beeps once a second for up to a minute, and phones that support it vibrate; press Stop to silence it.

The time left also appears in the browser tab’s title, so you can see it while working in another tab. The share link saves the length — send a “25-minute timer” link to a study group and each person starts their own.

Accurate in the background

Many simple timers count down by subtracting one second at a time. Browsers slow those steps down in background tabs and on locked phones, so the timer falls behind. This one stores the moment it will end and computes the remaining time from your device’s clock every time the screen updates, so switching tabs for ten minutes does not change when it ends. The sound is generated with the Web Audio API, which browsers allow only after you tap the page — one reason to press Start yourself. Keep the screen on uses the Screen Wake Lock API to stop a phone from locking while the timer runs, which helps in the kitchen or at the gym; browsers that do not support it simply ignore the switch.

Common timer lengths

Length Typical use
1–3 minutes brushing teeth, steeping tea, a plank
5 minutes a short break, a quick stretch
10 minutes a power nap, a timed quiz
15–20 minutes a reading block, a nap, a quick workout
25 minutes one Pomodoro work session, followed by a 5-minute break
30–60 minutes baking, study sessions, a meeting slot

The Pomodoro Technique alternates 25 minutes of focused work with a 5-minute break and takes a longer break after four rounds. Use the 5-minute preset for the break, or +1 min to stretch it.

Timers, durations and clock times

To find how long it is between two clock times — when a 45-minute timer started at 2:20 will end, or how long a meeting lasted — use the time duration calculator. To add up several durations, the time calculator; to convert minutes and seconds, minutes to seconds; and for hours worked across a shift, the hours calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a 5-minute timer?

Tap 5 min under Quick set and press Start. The display counts down from 5:00 and the line under it shows the clock time when it will end.

Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs or lock my phone?

It keeps exact time, because it counts toward a fixed end time rather than ticking down. Browsers may delay the alarm sound in a background tab or on a locked phone, so for anything important keep the tab open or turn on Keep the screen on.

Why don't I hear the alarm?

Browsers allow sound only after you tap something on the page, so press Start yourself rather than relying on a shared link, and check that the phone is not on silent. Alarm sound must be switched on.

Can I add time while it is running?

Yes. +1 min adds a minute at any point; after the alarm, it works as a one-minute snooze.

Does the timer work offline?

Once the page has loaded, yes. The countdown and the alarm run on your device, and nothing is sent to a server.

How long can the timer run?

Up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
